Plant Health

Customer Advisory letter

October 2022

Dear Customer

Pests and diseases are threatening the vigour, vitality and perhaps even the survival of some of our native trees and shrubs and we must all do our utmost to prevent the spread of infections across our shores and beyond.

Following is a selection of just a few of the most frequently seen problems notably; Mildew (roses, hawthorn and crab apple), Whitefly (beech), Phytopthera (alder) and canker (cherries) but there are many other pests that are threatening our trees.

Please be vigilant when purchasing stock and use a nursery that you can trust to supply healthy plants. Make sure that you inspect purchased plants before planting and observe surrounding plants on a regular basis. A host of other pests and bacterial or fungal infections may be waiting to invade.

If you suspect any problems please contact the Forestry Commission via their ‘Tree Alert’ web site, where you will also find an excellent list of all the pests and diseases that can infect tree species and the relative information.

Please look after our trees – they are our long-term livelihood and a living legend for all to behold. For this reason we ask that when visiting our Nursery / making collections, you accept this is a serious situation and respect the precautionary measures we have undertaken.

Thank you
