Description

Acer Plataniodes ‘Crimson Sentry‘ (commonly known as the Crimson Sentry Norway Maple) is a compact slow growing deciduous ornamental tree prized for its striking dark red-purple foliage and slender (sentry-like) upright habit.

A narrowly upright tree, ultimately 12m high and 5m across, with large, five-lobed, scallop-edged, very dark red-purple leaves. Clusters of small, yellow flowers tinged dark red in spring are followed by dark red and green, winged fruit in autumn
A very attractive maple with colourful rich red foliage, making an excellent avenue tree.

Stiffly ascending branches create a dense, narrow, columnar to oval canopy.

Five-lobed leaves emerge a vibrant, bright red in spring, deepen to a rich maroon-purple or plum-wine color through the summer, and transition to brilliant crimson or orange-red in autumn.

Small, lemon-yellow to yellow-green flower clusters appear on bare branches in early spring (welcomed by bees), followed by small red-and-green winged seeds (samaras).

Thrives in full sun to partial shade (full sun yields the richest leaf color; shelter from harsh winds helps prevent leaf scorch).

Adapts well to moist, well-drained soils, including clay, chalk, loam, or sand (though it dislikes waterlogged, peaty, or shallowly dry soil).

Rated very hardy, tolerating urban pollution, coastal exposure, and compacted soils.
