Acer platanoides ‘Crimson King’ (Norway Maple ‘Crimson King’) is a vigorous medium sized deciduous ornamental maple tree prized for its deep purplish, burgundy, crimson foliage and round headed canopy.
A handsome majestic maple that draws attention as a stand alone specimen tree.
Large, 5-lobed leaves emerge deep purplish-crimson in spring, hold a rich dark maroon/burgundy color through summer, and transition to bronze, brown, or orange in autumn.Â
Small, red-tinged yellow or reddish-orange flower clusters bloom in April on leafless branches before the leaves fully emerge.
Grows to an eventual height of roughly 10 to 15 meters (and up to 20+ meters in ideal conditions) with a dense, rounded to oval crown.
Thrives in full sun or light shade (partial shade helps protect the dark leaves from scorch in intense heat).
Adaptable to almost any well-drained soil type, including chalk, clay, loam, and sand.
Fully hardy, fast-growing, and notably tolerant of urban air pollution, wind, and short periods of drought.
