Description

Betula utilis Alba variety Jacquemontii  (commonly known as the Himalayan Birch or White-barked Himalayan Birch) is a vigorous medium to large ornamental birch tree prized for its exceptionally bright, dazzling snow-white peeling bark.

Often planted in groups of 3 or more to create a stunning garden feature.

Grows to a mature height of 10 to 18 meters (33 to 59 feet) with a spread of 4 to 8 meters (13 to 26 feet).

It features an upright, open, and pyramidal crown with ascending branches, available in single-stem or multi-stem forms.

The standout feature is its smooth, luminous, chalk-white bark that peels in thin sheets as the tree matures, often revealing a coppery-pink or darker layer underneath. Young twigs are hairy with a warm red-brown color and distinct lenticels. (The shape of lenticels is one of the characteristics used for tree identification. The dark horizontal lines on silver birch bark are the lenticels).

The foliage of the Betula Jacquemontii is ovate to triangular, dark green, coarsely toothed leaves in the spring and summer. They transform into a glowing golden-yellow color in the autumn before falling.

Produces long, yellow-brown male catkins (up to 12 cm long) in early spring.

Prefers full sun to partial shade.

Tolerates a wide range of soil types (chalk, clay, loam, and sand) as long as they are moist and well-drained.

Fully hardy, making it resilient through harsh winters and ideal for creating a dramatic winter silhouette when the leaves drop.
