Fagus sylvatica purpurea is a beautiful variant commonly known as copper beech, with deep purple foliage in spring, turning to a coppery-bronze as the summer progresses to autumn, making it a more dramatic alternative to the species.
For best results, grow Fagus sylvatica purpurea in full sun or partial shade, in a well-drained soil.
Beech hedges are typically grown from seed, a process that requires patience but can yield beautiful results. When growing purple beech from seed, it’s interesting to note that not all seedlings will produce purple foliage; in fact, around half may revert to the green form. Common beech DNA present in a copper beech isn’t necessarily a problem. Rather, it adds an extra dimension to the hedging, showing off its true natural beauty….this natural variation adds an element of surprise and diversity to your hedge.
