Aesculus Hippocastanum – Horse Chestnut

Magnificent and possibly one of the most beautiful of large flowering trees hardy in the British Isles. Exceptionally attractive when covered with its characteristic stout ‘candles’ of white flowers in May.  In October, shiny nut fruits appear from green spiny fruits which split to release the ‘conkers’ – historically so named from when children played the game of ‘conqueror’. May grow to more than 30m (100ft)

Likes fertile soils and makes an attractive specimen or woodland tree.

The planting season for bare-rooted trees and shrubs is generally between the months of November – March
