Description

Prunus ‘Shirotae’ (commonly known as the Mount Fuji cherry or Shirotae) is a classic, small to medium Japanese Ornamental cherry tree with a spreading flat crown. Fresh green young foliage makes an attractive contrast against the fragrant pure white, semi double flowers in the spring. Foliage turns vibrant shades of golden-yellow, orange and red in autumn.

Spreading, graceful, and flat-topped crown with horizontal or slightly pendulous/arching branches.

Typically grows to about 3 to 8 meters (10 to 25 feet) in height and width, reaching roughly 4m × 4m after 10 years.

In mid-spring (April), it produces large, fragrant, single to semi-double (5–11+ petals) pure white flowers in drooping clusters. The blossom appears on bare or emerging-leaf branches.

New leaves emerge pale green (often tinged with bronze), darken to rich green in summer, and turn vibrant shades of orange and red (or golden-yellow) in autumn.

Distinctive dark, smooth-to-fissured bark that contrasts sharply with the snowy-white spring flowers.

Full sun in a sheltered spot to protect emerging blossoms from harsh frost.

Moderately fertile, moist, and well-drained. It tolerates most soil types, including chalk, clay, loam, and sand (acid, neutral, or alkaline).

Fully hardy.
