Description

Malus Rudolph (commonly known as the Rudolph crab apple) is a pretty, small to medium, deciduous ornamental crab apple tree, of Canadian descent, named after Santa’s reindeer.
Widely prized for its upright habit, multi season colour and resistance to disease, it bears glossy bronze-red, turning to dark bronze-green leaves on red young shoots. Flowers are a rosy red, deeper in bud, followed by long enduring, orange yellow oblong fruits.

  • Flowers: In late spring (around May), the branches produce a heavy display of large, fragrant, deep pink to rose-red single flowers (up to 5cm across) that emerge from deeper red buds.
  • Foliage: Leaves emerge shortly after or alongside the blossom. They start out a striking copper-red or bronze-red, mature through dark bronze-green or purple tones over the summer, and turn a clear golden-yellow in autumn.
  • Fruit: Small, persistent, oblong orange-yellow to reddish-yellow fruits appear in autumn and last well into the winter, serving as a food source for birds and wildlife or for making jelly.
  • Size and Shape: Starts with a neat, upright or columnar habit when young, maturing into a more rounded or open crown. It typically reaches an ultimate height and spread of roughly 4 to 8 metres (13 to 26 feet) over 10 to 20 years.
  • Disease & Hardiness: Exceptionally resistant to common apple pests and fungal issues (such as scab and canker), fully hardy across the UK and northern Europe, and tolerant of urban pollution.

  • Position: Best grown in full sun to light shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained loamy, clay, chalk, or sandy soils, and adapts well to various soil pH levels.
  • Uses: Ideal as a standalone focal point in small gardens, lawns, courtyard spaces, or planted in rows along driveways and mixed borders.
